My research seeks to explore the relationship between austerity, social inequality and the everyday geographies of working class resistance. How do working class people perceive and experience austerity and inequality? How is resistance to austerity and inequality understood and enacted? What barriers do people face which prevent them from resisting? Do notions of class and place enable people to engage in resistance?
This research is based in Stockton-on-Tees and will utilise qualitative research methods, primarily participant observation and interviews. It is being conducted in collaboration with Thrive, a Stockton-on-Tees based charity who aim to “support and enable those living in poverty and on the margins of society to improve their livelihoods”.
