NINE DTP has 18 training pathways, or disciplinary and interdisciplinary areas, which cover an extensive range of subject areas within the social sciences. Each training pathway is accredited by the ESRC for the quality and relevance of its research and training provision, and each is offered only in departments which have met the rigorous quality standards of the ESRC (ranked as either world-leading, or of internationally excellent quality).

Every candidate must select one (and only one) pathway on their nomination form. Although PhD training within a student’s university is centred on the department or school where they will be obtaining their degree, pathways serve as crucial tools for DTP-sponsored training and networking, as well as playing a key role in the studentship awarding process.
