Jake Pointer: “An Investigation into Racism and Inequalities in the Meat Industry: Slaughterhouses and Factory Farm work “

In Students by General Account

My project is aiming to uncover whether in contemporary British Society racism and exploitation of ethnic minorities takes place within factory farms and slaughterhouses. The idea stemmed from reading Upton Sinclair’s (1904) classic novel The Jungle which explores very similar themes in Chicago meat packing plants in the early 1900s. Coupled with my passion for veganism, this project is a challenge I am very much looking forward to.

Having earned a 1st class BA (Hons) in Sociology from the University of Central Lancashire, an MA in Sociology followed at Newcastle University. Outside of academia I love to read fiction, and often find this extremely useful in relation to my studies (this project even came from reading a novel). I also go boxing a few times a week and enjoy travelling, usually to places which are perhaps not everyone’s first choice (I find Slavic countries in particular fascinating!).
