Research in Practice

Research in Practice (RinP) is a core component of ESRC doctoral training, designed to develop transferable skills, broaden professional networks, and support engagement beyond academia.

The Research in Practice initiative is designed to help social science PhD students apply their research skills in different settings, build meaningful partnerships, and explore how academic knowledge can create positive change beyond the university. This might take the form of a placement, an overseas institutional visit (OIV) a collaborative research project, or embedded engagement activity.

As part of every ESRC-funded studentship, RinP draws on expertise across industry, business and civil society to provide dedicated time and support for students to collaborate with academic, public, private, or third-sector partners to gain insight into the social and professional contexts that social science research connects with.
