Description Capturing the views and experiences of children and young people directly, rather than by proxy through parents or professionals, is increasingly recognised as essential for research, evaluation and policy development. Drawing on the tutors’ extensive experience and proven expertise in this field, this popular course provides an opportunity for participants to learn more about the ethical, methodological and practical considerations of doing research and evaluation with children and young people. It is designed for people with prior practical research/ evaluation experience. Alongside the theoretical and policy underpinning and practical examples and applications in real-world contexts, the day provides plenty of time for participants to discuss and reflect on applying the learning to their own projects.

Objectives

By the end of the day participants will:

  • Be able to plan a research and/or evaluation project with children and/or young people
  • Understand the policy, theory and advantages to this approach
  • Be more aware of, and equipped to meet, challenges
  • Understand the methodological and ethical considerations involved

Topics covered:

  • Benefits and challenges
  • Overview of theoretical, legal and policy context
  • Additional ethical considerations
  • Designing appropriate methods
  • Using creative methods
  • Participative approaches

Who will benefit?

This course is suitable for people with practical experience of research and/or evaluation (qualitative or quantitative), who want to learn how to apply this to working with children and young people.

Those who complete this course are encouraged to attend our follow-on day, which is an intermediate-advanced workshop which builds on these topics, and provides further opportunity to explore the methodological and ethical issues in more depth. Please click here for further details

Learning outcomes

Participants will have a good grasp of the considerations, choices and steps involved, and be able to apply these in practice to their own research/ evaluation with children and young people.
