IAS Fellows’ Seminar – Reflections on Masculinities and Mountaineering

3rd December 2018 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

3rd December 2018, 13:00 to 14:00, Seminar Room, Institute of Advanced Study, Professor Peter Hansen (Worcester Polytechnic Institute)

Abstract

This seminar examines the relationship of mountaineering and masculinity in dialogue with the IAS theme of masculinities and martial sports. Nineteenth-century mountaineers described their pastime as the manliest of sports, and western, male mountaineers continued to be celebrated in similar terms in literature and culture through the twentieth century. The increasing visibility of non-western and female mountaineers throughout this period has only superficially called these earlier associations into question. This seminar will reflect on the multidisciplinary and cross-cultural perspectives available in the broader work at the IAS to illuminate the fraught relationship between mountaineering and masculinity in the early twenty-first century.

Places are limited and so any academic colleagues or students interested in attending a seminar should register online in advance to reserve a place. Places will be confirmed within 48 hours of receipt (subject to availability). Alternatively please contact the Institute in advance to reserve a place.
