“Collective action and digital storytelling for spatial justice”

My current project, ‘Collective action and digital storytelling for spatial justice’, potentiates the societal and academic impact of my PhD research by allowing me to develop two manuscripts for publication, report back findings in accessible formats and language to the non-academic public, updating and exchanging knowledge with research participants, expanding my academic networks, learning new skills, strengthening the interdisciplinarity of my research and setting a solid foundation for future postdoctoral projects and collaborations. A component of further focused research is linked to a communicative exercise of digital storytelling for social media in partnership with two citizen collectives in Manizales (Colombia) and other fieldwork activities such as meetings and workshops.

Before the ESRC Postdoctoral Fellowship, I completed my PhD at the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape at Newcastle University. My PhD thesis, titled “Citizen Participation, Collective Action and Digital Media: seeking Spatial Justice in Manizales, Colombia”, explored the possibilities and limitations of citizen participation and collective action for spatial justice across the online and offline spaces of the everyday. The research questions delved into the relationships between governmental initiative and socio-territorial movements seeking spatial justice, how civic society mobilises, and the local roles of digital media in collective action. My research identified and unpacked the ambiguity of socio-territorial movements in the city, sometimes working with, against or in parallel to local authorities while integrating artistic and creative strategies into their agendas with a language rooted in alternative indigenous knowledge.
