Research in Practice

NINE DTP is coordinating a Research in Practice (RiP) component for all funded students in their PhD research. It is expected that all students will undertake a 3-month placement as part of their studentship – which will provide a suite of options aimed at developing theoretical knowledge, methodological skills, and practical abilities to work across multiple sectors.

Often thought of as internship, the RiP provides more flexibility to compliment and contribute to research, providing a fruitful opportunity for knowledge exchange and personal and professional development. NINE DTP will fully support with matching students to placement opportunities from our established partners and those advertised by UKRI. Examples here include:

• Parliamentary office of Science and Technology
• Ministry of Justice
• Department for Education (DfE)

We would also like to encourage students to source their own placements and be proactive in developing their learning experiences.

An essential element of the RiP will be the Development Needs Analysis (DNA), which is fundamental to achieving flexible and responsive doctoral training and a more bespoke student experience to allow for interests and career options to be fully explored.

Experts across industry, business and civil society will be contributing towards Research in Practice training and provides students with a unique opportunity to establish strong networks with organisations.

During the 3-month placement the DTP will support with travel and expenses – full funding breakdown is in the placement guidelines below. If you would like to apply for a placement, please complete the placement form below.

We encourage students to contact NINE DTP at [email protected] to discuss the placement scheme before preparing an application.
