Description | This course will:
This intermediate level course offers a hands-on introduction to creative approaches to qualitative research. The various stages of the research process will be covered, from data collection and analysis through to writing with qualitative data. Day 1 will begin with an introduction to what we mean by doing qualitative research creatively, with an emphasis on researcher creativity and imagination. The rest of the day will focus on a range of different creative methods, including sensory and visual methods, and with an opportunity for gaining hands-on experience. On the morning of Day 2 we will focus on creative approaches to data analysis, including an opportunity for course participants to discuss their own analytical challenges. Finally, we will focus on creative modes of engagement, including within traditional academic writing and in developing alternative formats which may draw in wider audiences, eg the use of cartoons and zines, or sociological fiction. Throughout the two days there will be opportunities for participants to reflect upon their own research topic and their own data. Course requirements This is an intermediate course where participants will be expected to have a good understanding of the basic principles of qualitative methods and to have some experience of qualitative data collection and analysis. Priority will also be given to participants who currently have their own qualitative data to reflect upon. Participants will be invited to bring an example of their own qualitative data (eg text or pictures that can be brought in hard copy) for use in the participative workshop sections.
