Student Disability Support Allowances

NINE DTP , the ESRC and our seven partner institutions are committed to ensuring that our awards holders receive all reasonable support to conduct their studies and engage with the NINE DTP programme of activities and events.

All NINE DTP award holders will have access to institutional support, which can be used to provide suitable adjustments to university spaces and offices to ensure student can access and utilise university facilities.

Our award holders can also receive additional funds in the form of the ESRC DSA monies (Disabled Student Allowance) which can be used to support travel, access and facilities for students with specific needs in conducting their research.

If you are a NINE DTP student (either current, or with a firm offer of funding), we would encourage you to reach out to your institutional Disability Support Teams to register with them, and discuss your particular needs. They can then confirm the level of additional support you may be able to access, and can support your application for funding from the DTP.

Please note: the DTP cannot provide access to ESRC DSA funds until such time as the initial assessment of student needs has been conducted; we encourage students to complete the institutional assessment at their earliest convenience.

Disabled Students Allowance (DSA)

“Disabled Students Allowances (DSA) are intended to help with additional expenditure for the costs of study-related requirements that may be incurred as a result of disability, mental health problems or specific learning difficulties that means additional support is needed to undertake a UK Research and Innovation funded studentship. The allowances can cover the cost of non-medical personal assistance, items of specialist equipment, extra travel costs and general expenses.”— UKRI Website.

We encourage all award-holders to contact their institutional support teams in the first instance for expert advice and guidance – please see the contact details provided.
